Apples and Oranges
Adam Osman-Krinsky
I remember standing next to you as you leapt
To the third bar on the monkey bars
And swung gracefully across while I stood
In awe.
Back when I used to have crushes
In secret, back when i used to tell you
Secrets with my mouth half-full of
Sandwiches with the crusts cut off, back
When I used to wish I was the older sibling.
Now, the orange slices have left peeled
Memories in my cuticles and sweetness
On my lips that kiss your name onto
The jungle gym that calloused hands hugged.
And each night, as the waves
Came rolling in, a boat sails on
The horizons of your eyes, but to me
It looks like a honeycrisp
Cut into slices with the seeds cut out.
Someone shouting at the wind, you locking
Eyes and moving with everything, nothing, me
Staring at you in awe
Stagnant, awe keeping me still.
To the third bar on the monkey bars
And swung gracefully across while I stood
In awe.
Back when I used to have crushes
In secret, back when i used to tell you
Secrets with my mouth half-full of
Sandwiches with the crusts cut off, back
When I used to wish I was the older sibling.
Now, the orange slices have left peeled
Memories in my cuticles and sweetness
On my lips that kiss your name onto
The jungle gym that calloused hands hugged.
And each night, as the waves
Came rolling in, a boat sails on
The horizons of your eyes, but to me
It looks like a honeycrisp
Cut into slices with the seeds cut out.
Someone shouting at the wind, you locking
Eyes and moving with everything, nothing, me
Staring at you in awe
Stagnant, awe keeping me still.
