The Coyote and the Deer
Chase Wade
When the deer was innocent
Others fed on her magic
Turning her fur red and open
Leaving her spirit to roam
Low and smooth
Like leather after skin
Roadside at midnight
Someone waits behind the phone
To be told to clean up
The coyote’s mess
She comes out at dawn with a
Pack of hungry boys and
You wouldn’t think she knows her
Way to fresh meat but she keeps at it and
you know what side of the city she lives on
Others fed on her magic
Turning her fur red and open
Leaving her spirit to roam
Low and smooth
Like leather after skin
Roadside at midnight
Someone waits behind the phone
To be told to clean up
The coyote’s mess
She comes out at dawn with a
Pack of hungry boys and
You wouldn’t think she knows her
Way to fresh meat but she keeps at it and
you know what side of the city she lives on
